"Not valid for night flight or by color signal controll.
None."
-----------

I took the FAA medical during a visit in the USA, but be aware; it takes around 4 weeks (express method, usually 6+ weeks) to be completely done with the whole procedure.
First you’ll take the regular medical (The First Class Medical cost me $35,- search for the cheapest MD that is allowed to take the medical. Usually it is around $120,-.).
Once you’re done with it, you’ll have to send a written letter to the FAA where you ask to take a signal light test at the airport. The FAA will send you a reply where they tell you where to take the test and who to contact. You are able to set a date and if you want to change the location where the test will be taken, you’ll also have to tell that to the FAA by another letter. Another option to speed the whole procedure up is to call them, instead of sending them a letter, but this is not very much liked by the FAA unless there is a certain reason for it.
Once you have the letter that allows you to take the signal light test and an appointment, you’ll go to the airport and the examiner will measure the first distance (1000 feet) and from that point you’ll get to see 3 random colors, picked by the controller in the tower. If you pass that, the examiner will go with you to the next (and last) distance of 1500 feet (of course this is the distance from the Tower). There the Tower will show you another 3 lights, which the controller can pick randomly.
The controller has to shoot the light for 5 seconds as a steady light (no movement, most controllers do that wrong to simulate how you’ll receive it as you would be in the air, also my tower controller did it wrong, but I passed anyways, so it didn’t matter.).
Also during the procedure the examiner will write down behind you what he saw (so that you can’t read it) and then he will write down what you told him, what you saw.
If all 6 colors match what he wrote down, you passed and he will exchange your current restricted medical into a new medical that has no restrictions on it, but it shows that you successfully passed the signal light test. (The exact statement: “has met the medical standards prescribed in part 67, Federal Aviation Regulations, for this class of Medical Certificate.” And below in the Limitations line the regional FAA MD, who allowed you to take the test, has his signature after the “Approved:” and one line below (still in the limitations box) it shows the date when you took the test after that it shows the regional FAA MDs name.)
You’ll also receive one letter from the examiner, which states: “This letter will serve as acceptable evidence that you have satisfactorily demonstrated your ability to meet the color vision standards for any class of airman medical certification as prescribed in Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations, Sections 67.103(c), and 67.303(c).” It also tells you to keep this letter and show it the next Medical examiner when you take your next medical.
In case you fail, you’ll keep the old medical, but after a certain amount of time you can ask the FAA again to retake the test and they will tell you if where and when to retake the test, as much as I remember after a certain amount of tries they will let you take the test at night. I don’t know how often you can retake the test, but if I remember it right, there are quite a few tries that you have, if not unlimited, but I don’t know how much it will affect your medical class.
Once you’ve got all the paperwork that proves that you are allowed to fly, you’re set to go... |
